What is Osteopathy?

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that focuses on total body health. Osteopaths are unique in their approach to the body, as they skilfully assess how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a holistic unit.

Osteopaths use this information to help reduce pain, restore movement and improve the function of the body.

In Australia, osteopaths are government registered practitioners who complete a minimum of five years’ university training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, general medical diagnosis and osteopathic techniques

How Do Osteopaths Treat?

Osteopathy is a hands-on, drug-free manual therapy. Using skilled evaluation, diagnosis and a wide range of hands-on techniques, osteopaths can identify important types of dysfunction in your body.

Osteopathic treatment uses soft tissue and myofascial release techniques, stretching , and joint and spinal manipulation. For some complaints the use of visceral (organ), indirect and cranial techniques may be applied. These are quite gentle, but very effective.

As no two bodies are the same, neither are any two treatments, so your Osteopath will tailor the treatment to ensure you get the most out of your session.

Common complaints your Osteopath may help with:

• Back and Neck Pain
• Headaches and Migraines
• Sciatica
• Disc Injuries

• Sports Injuries
• Shoulder, Elbow and Wrist Pain
• Hip, Knee, Ankle and Foot Pain
• Tendonitis

• Bursitis
• Postural and Ergonomic Assessments
• Pregnancy Related Pain
• TMJ (Jaw) Pain

A common misconception is that osteopaths only treat the spine, when in fact we treat pretty much every part of the body.
